Horror innovation had hit an all time low after remakes of A Nightmare on Elm Street and I Spit on Your Grave leaped onto screens in 2010, and it seemed that maybe, just maybe, horror remakes had finally come to an abrupt stop. But no, Sam Raimi, alongside director Fede Alverez, resurrects his 1981 classic with gruesomely feeble results.

Evil Dead focuses on five friends who head to a remote cabin. Mia (Jane Levy) is a drug addict and is determined to go “cold turkey” with the help from her brother, David (Shiloh Fernandez), his girlfriend, Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and friends Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Olivia (Jessica Lucas). They soon stumble upon the Book of the Dead, which summons demons from the surrounding woods, consuming their bodies one by one.

The original basked in creativity, due to a low budget, and dwindled in character depth and story. However, this reimagining forms a back-story for its leading duo and delves into the world of the Book of the Dead.

Predictably, the siblings have a strained relationship: their mother was mentally ill and Mia attended to her needs, as opposed to David. The story is certainly plausible but it’s a clichéd narrative strategy to rebuild broken bonds, and due to the script being completely immersed in brother, sister issues, it ultimately forgets its expendable supporting cast.

Also, the grim atmosphere takes itself way too seriously. The films excessive gore replaces the originals deranged humour and high-octane suspense, and borders on unnecessary.

Alverez puts in a fair effort but his blood-soaked vision never reaches thrilling new heights, although, admittedly, Evil Dead is one of the better remakes in recent times.
